Abigail Kokai grew up in Ohio and earned her BFA from Columbus College of Art & Design, focusing in Illustration and Industrial Design. She relocated to Georgia for her MFA in Fibers from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Her work reflects her interests in illustration, graphic design, and interaction with objects. By creating quilted objects, she is able to tell stories through visual communication and tactile experience. Her relationship with quilts began at a very young age, sharing and making sewn objects within her family. The process of ‘making’ evolved through her education and awareness of artistic principles. For Kokai, the quilt is a tactile object that narrates a lived experience preserving a place and time. Quilts communicate the significance of an individual and the experience of a community.
Abigail Kokai has taught and exhibited as a quilter and as an artist. Her quilts are in several permanent collections including the Savannah College of Art and Design.
